New Patterns and Kits for Christmas

A few ideas for Christmas?  It’s only weeks away, yes I’m sorry, I shouldn’t mention the C word, but I did.  So here goes a few suggestions:

Sock yarn slouchy beanies, these are a breeze to knit and the pattern will be free with the yarn purchase, otherwise pattern available separately for £3.00.  Here’s mine ‘in progress’  as the pattern is just finished the testing phase.      I’ve made mine in the less slouchy version, ladies size using the Peach/Pink shade (10).  Denise, our sample knitter is making the mens extra slouchy in the Brown (12) shades of Austermann Step, photos to follow.

Sock yarn slouchy beanie

Kid Silk and Palila Scarf, Shawl or Wrap kit, contains yarn to make either a scarf, narrow V shawl.  Add an extra ball of kid silk if you want to make a wider V Shawl or the Wrap.     Usual kit price is £15, on offer at £12.    A quick and easy knit using one strand of each yarn, knitted on large needles and looks lovely.

Textured Hat and Mittens set, a quick knit, over a few evenings.  Uses Austermann Merino Silk, a super soft yarn in a range of classic shades.   Hat and Mitts take 2 and 1.5 balls of yarn respectively.   I’m also working on a cowl pattern to match which will be available later in the week.    Pattern is £4 for hat/mitts and cowl in a variety of sizes from child to adult.      If you buy the yarn for the set, you’ll get the pattern emailed to you free.

EVENT: ST MUNGO’S WOOLLY HAT DAY 2012

Calling all knitters to get their needles and yarn out for homeless people!

Homelessness charity St Mungo’s is asking knitters across the country to get their needles and yarn out to help create a mountain of bobble hats for its third annual Woolly Hat Day on Friday 26 October.

This year St Mungo’s is looking to auction the distinctive orange hats to raise money for its work supporting homeless people to rebuild their lives.

Working across London and the South, St Mungo’s has been opening doors for homeless people for more than 40 years. With over 100 projects supporting people with housing, health and work opportunities, St Mungo’s supports thousands of people each year to recover from being homeless and prevent the problems that can lead to homelessness.

Russell Benson, St Mungo’s community and events fundraising coordinator, said: “We’re appealing to knitters to help us

Laughing-Freds

make a big impact on this October’s Woolly Hat Day. As the nights draw in and the temperature drops, life becomes even more difficult for anyone sleeping on the streets. By getting your needles and yarn out and creating a ‘mountain’ of hats, you’ll be helping us to raise awareness and funds for our work supporting homeless and vulnerable people.”

Please visit www.woollyhatday.org for the official Woolly Hat Day bobble hat knitting pattern, created especially for us by CalKnits – thank you to them – and delivery information.

Rainbow Cardigan for Adults

AdultCardiSchematic

Adult Modular Cardigan / Jacket, beta pattern release

Our latest Woolly Madly Deeply original pattern,  with a great fanfare (well me waving madly and excitedly!), is the Adult Modular Cardigan / Jacket.    Sized from 34″ to a 58″ finished chest measurement and knitted in garter stitch it’s designed to be worn with 0-4 inches of positive ease.   As the name suggests it’s modular in construction, but differs slightly to the baby version, not least in size.      I’ve added a few inches of length before you knit the mitred square on the back to ensure it’s long enough for all sizes, but if you prefer a cropped ‘Chanel’ style, then feel free to miss out knitting those extra inches and think about narrower sleeves.

The pattern is free with purchases of the Creative & Filz yarn or the Murano Lace yarn.  Yarn requirements are listed below.    Add the recommended yarn to your order and we’ll email you the pdf once your order is received and processed.    We’ll do this automatically for all purchases of one or more balls of Murano Lace and two or more of the Creative & Filz, so no need to add any codes or comments to your order.

We’re currently test knitting, so you’ll receive the final version sometime next week.   It’s been proofed and checked but is having a final edit and run through.     After that, the pattern will be available for sale.

It’s a drop shoulder style, so easy to dress up or down and looks fantastic in the Creative & Filz 02 Rainbow colourway, its 100% wool and feels scrumptious.     We have more on order but they are selling fast.   A great alternative, using a 57% wool/43% acrylic blend, is the Murano Lace.  It’s also worsted weight (for British Knitters that is between Double Knit and Aran thickness).   It has a more subtle stripe and if you check out the yarn, there are some finished garment photos to show you how it looks knitted or crocheted in the various colours.      This one comes in 100g balls and is great value.     If you’d like to make a plain version or use an acrylic yarn for a machine washable jacket, try Vanna’s Choice, the colour range is lovely.

Garter stitch is super easy, it’s pretty much just knits all the way but it’s also really forgiving.  If you have curves, and I have more than I’d like, then garter will gently wrap around and hug them.    It stretches over lumps and bumps and never tells your secrets.

A few hints and tips for this one:

  • Always slip the first stich and purl the last stitch of every row, it gives a nice neat edge for picking up your loops for the next part of the jacket.
  • Check your tension, if you have too many rows and/or stitches per inch, then use a smaller needle or knit a smaller size.
  • Measure regularly.   As you knit the fronts, measure their length against the back piece so you don’t end up with one longer than the other.
  • If you get stuck, drop me an email sales@woollymadlydeeply.com and ask, I’m more than happy to help you.

All the Austermann yarns have 10% with the coupon code AU10 at the checkout.  You have to go into the checkout process itself, so if you enter the code too soon, you’ll get a message to ask you to wait until the next step so you can either register or login first.  Once that’s done, you can enter your code and the discount will be applied to your order.

Adult Modular Cardigan

caedi-002
Pattern due on Wednesday 16th May.   We’re busy proof reading and tech editing to hopefully catch any errors or instructions which aren’t as clear as I’d like.       I’m really pleased with this one.   The chosen yarns are Creative & Filz in 02 Rainbow and Murano Lace (another worsted self striping but more subtle), here are the colours.

Here’s a swatch of the Creative & Filz, gorgeous isn’t it?    The cardigan will take roughly 1100yds of worsted weight yarn for the smallest size and goes up to a 54inch finished chest measurement.       The pdf pattern will be free with the yarn purchase or available for separate download.

If you required a printed pattern there will be a charge for this as we post them in a cardboard sleeve and it involves printing 12 pages in colour which adds to both time and postage weight.

If you download the pdf you can print it whenever you need it and make notes as you go along for any modifications.

Tension is 16sts x 30 rows over 4inches on 5.5mm needles.

Knit Now Issue 8

TIM 3820 medium2
Subscribers will have received their copies of Knit Now Issue 8 in this weekends post.    Another issue received with great excitement about seeing our patterns in print.    Our Cashmere Cosy pattern is shown on pages 38/39modelled by one of the Practical Publishing team.  He loved the hat so much he even asked to keep it, what a compliment.     Photo copyright of Practical Publishing Ltd.

It’s made using 2-3 balls of the Superwash Merino Cashmere (10% off this month) so give it a try.  It’s sized for babies through to an XL adult size for the largest of noggins.

Some visitors have had problems with the discount codes, so I’ve just left the discount as a straight 10% off all colours of the yarn.    This is a super easy knit, quick, it took me a couple of evenings at most and looks great on both men and women.

A great alternative to this would be the Austermann Merino Silk, this will be available in a couple of weeks when our order arrives.   It’s a similar blend to the Lion Brand but has silk instead of nylon, it’s gorgeous!

The inspiration?    My boyfriend (who works outdoors) hates knitted hats.  He says they’re itchy, never fit properly and always look the worse for washing.   It’s a good job I love a challenge isnt’ it?     I started playing with ideas for a unisex hat in a gorgeous cashmere blend as it’s soft, warm and washable.    It’s easy to knit, but also gives knitters a chance to try a luxury yarn without breaking the bank.

We hope you like it!

Vanna’s Choice 10% off April

860SkeinArt Vanna’s Choice is a premium acrylic yarn, super soft and despite much effort I can’t get the hats I’ve made with it to even think about pilling! It’s affordable, one 100g ball will knit up a couple of hats and it goes a long, long way. Available in a wide range of colours, we’re stocking 20 of those at the moment, all the best selling shades.

It’s on offer throughout April with a 10% discount, many of you will have seen it in Let’s Knit! Magazine issue 54.

For Let’s Knit readers, I’ve disabled the product code and put on a blanket 10% discount as you really do need to have logged in to the online shop for the code to work and until I can get that to work in a different way, it’s easier to give everyone the discount.

Knit Now Issue 7

Knit Now Features Woolly Madly Deeply, our designs and yarns.   Special offer code.

There is a 10% off coupon code for the merino cashmere yarn, If you try to add the coupon before Step 1 of the checkout, it won’t recognise the discount.  I’m working on fixing that bit of code to work differently so for now I’ve discounted the blossom and wine colourways by 10% without the code so no need to enter at the moment  If you’re looking for another colour, drop me an email sales@woollymadlydeeply.com and I’ll sort it out for you.

My subscriber copy of Knit Now Issue 7 arrived this morning to much excitement in our house.   See our Superwash Merino Cashmere yarn, Alpine Wool yarn and new designs from Loraine Birchall of Woolly Madly Deeply using the Alpine Wool, entitled The Eagle Hat and Scarf, see photo below, courtesy of Knit Now Magazine / Practical Publishing Ltd.

Also featured is Elfine by Anna Elliott, the Springstar Hat by Jacqui Harding and Barnyard Pals by Cilla Webb.  All created as part of the  Knit Now Designer Challenge.  Yarn was provided by Woolly Madly Deeply.  The challenge was to create a pattern using just two balls of superwash merino cashmere.   The designers have done an amazing job don’t you think?

Hope you love the new patterns, I’ll add links as soon as Knit Now add them to both Ravelry.com and their own Blog.

We have limited stocks of the Alpine Wool, new stock is due at the end of April/Early May on this range.  We do have an alternative roving yarn by Schoeller & Stahl which is due in stock early next week.   At that point I’ll add kits for the Hat only, Scarf only and a reduced price kit for both the Hat and Scarf using that yarn.   For those who wish to pre order the Lion Brand Alpine Wool instead, we do have alternative colours available in stock (with Red as the main colour) and enough stock of the Barley to make up one hat kit.    We were caught on the hop with the early issue of this months magazine but on the plus side it means you’ve seen our yarns and patterns.  We’re delighted with that.

New Baby Pattern Update

I’ve been experimenting with modular knitting using the Lion Brand Amazing yarn and had great fun with colours, shapes and texture.   Part of this was to create a baby cardigan pattern using mitred squares, shaped sleeves, garter stitch panels and try to make it seamless.      I almost got away with it but then decided to knit the two side/sleeve seams together in a three needle bind off.   It gives a lovely neat seam inside, involves NO sewing and means I can rip it back and reknit the yarn when baby is too small for this one.    I used the Mauna Loa colourway and added an icord border, the smallest size used 1.5 balls of yarn.

Here are a few pics, the pattern is being written up in sizes from birth to 2yrs, smallest size is shown in the photos.    It’ll be available as a download both here and on Ravelry and will be a sold as part of a kit with the Amazing yarn, buy two balls of Amazing yarn and get the pattern free.  Just remember to request the free pattern when buying two balls of Amazing or more, don’t add the pattern to your basket as you’ll be charged.

It’s now available, so add your coupon code to the comments part of your order and I’ll print a version for you and add the pdf version to your account here on the website so you can download it.    If you are a Ravelry.com member, do let me have your username and I’ll add the pdf to your Ravelry Account at the same time.  If you don’t want to knit with Amazing, don’t worry, the pattern will be available as a download via the website at a price of £2.50 and available in our Ravelry pattern store.   Thanks for all your positive comments.

£2 off Fisherman’s Wool January Offer

Fisherman's Wool special offer
£2 off per ball/skein of Fisherman’s Wool, available in Natural, Oatmeal or Nature’s Brown.   These gigantic skeins weigh in at 227g each making them excellent value compared to similar undyed yarns such as Sirdar Eco

Make these amazing items using this yarn which is simply fantastic for felting, dyeing, knitting or crochet.   I’ll be posting pictures later this week of my latest adventures in dyeing Fisherman’s Wool for a sweater I’m making.     I’m using the natural shade for the body and the dyed skein (pinks and purples) for the fair isle pattern on the yoke and cuffs.

All the patterns shown below are available free on the Lion Brand Yarn website.   Email us for yarn requirements or yan substitution advice at sales@woollymadlydeeply.com     Many thanks to Lion Brand for the photographs.

The Snowflake Tote Bag, ideal for knitting projects, uses 1 ball of Natural and 1 ball of Nature’s Brown.  The little coin purse is made using Natural, Oatmeal and Nature’s Brown and can be made from scraps.   The cowl, suitable for men or women as you can see from the photo, takes 1 ball and is shown in Natural but would be gorgeous in Oatmeal.

I’d love to make the Felted Tribal Bag?    Absolutely stunning, using Nature’s Brown, Oatmeal and Natural (1 ball of each colour), it has a very clever construction and is felted for extra stength.

From a knitters point of view, felting also hides any imperfections, so this would be a good colourwork project for someone who isn’t confident but knows the techniques.   I’d be happy knowing that the felting would hide any slips or uneven stitches.     Only you will know 🙂
